Consultation and community engagement Aerothermal Group (ATG) and AAD (South West)
The proposed facility will take 75,000 tpa of commercial waste, extracting c. 18,000 tpa of recyclables, creating c. 16,000 tpa of soil-like material (digestate) and generate 3MW of renewable electricity. Sauce has also established and now facilitates a local ‘Community Liaison Forum' for the project at Lee Moor in South Devon. Planning permission was granted in November 2011. Energos Renewable energy company Energos chose Sauce to develop and deliver a consultation and community involvement strategy as part of its planning application for a gasification facility in Knowsley, Merseyside. Sauce provided PR, stakeholder consultation and public affairs support as well as establishing and facilitating a local community liaison group. The application was successful. PR, communications and media support 4R Group Sauce provides PR, communications and media support to 4R Group to raise its profile across the waste and recycling industry. We started working with this innovative and forward thinking company in the summer of 2011 and helped them build up media coverage in the run up to RWM, where we also assisted in designing and delivering their stand. We have achieved significant media coverage in local and trade press for 4R on a number of stories, including their work with recycling marine dredgings, land restoration, fertilizer replacement products from AD digestate. We also wrote their entry for the National Recycling Awards 2011 for which they won Best Recycled Product for their Potassic Lime product. Multi-channel communications Cory Environmental and Southend Sauce is helping Cory Environmental reach 60% recycling by 2015 in Southend-on-Sea. We are running a multi-year, multi-channel campaign, with recycling and waste reduction initiatives, targeting all groups including estates and high rise, schools and businesses. Key to the work is the development of a champion's network to help promote recycling around the borough, which includes running champion training workshops, pledge cards and promoting recycling at local events throughout the year. The current recycling rate is 45% which is an increase of 11% in the three years. Recycling strategy development & implementation EC1/ Islington and North Fulham NDC Sauce developed recycling pilots to address different service delivery challenges in EC1/ Islington and on the Clem Attlee estate, Sauce worked with London Remade Solutions to manage an integrated communications strategy to raise awareness of pilot recycling schemes and to ensure the highest participation possible. The community wide pilots engaged young people, residents and local businesses. Initiatives included Recycling for Real workshops, recruiting a team of local Recycling Champions, a Plastic Bags are Rubbish campaign, a door knocking campaign and Make a Date with Recycling, a free event to put businesses in touch with local service providers, as well as developing and delivering lessons on tackling climate change to a class of 10 year olds. In EC1, recycling participation reached more than 80% and a recycling rate of over 20% was achieved in six months. At the end of the Clem Attlee project over 70% claimed to be recycling more than the previous year and 89% were very or fairly satisfied with the recycling service. Importantly, contamination of recycling by non-recyclables was much lower than is experienced on other kerbside recycling schemes in the area. ExCel London/Newham 2012 Unit Sauce developed a pilot public place recycling scheme at the Excel London exhibition centre supported by London Remade Solutions. The pilot scheme targeted dry recyclables. Waste audits were conducted prior to the trial and during the pilot to measure how much waste was recycled. A carefully researched communications campaign was implemented, including t-shirts for cleaning staff, feedback forms, floor tiles and table top promotions, and bin graphics incorporating the Recycle Now iconography. A survey concluded that more than four out of five people knew they could recycle at the venue; and a waste audit found that 80% of materials went in the correct container. The project demonstrated the ability to meet the Olympic Delivery Authority's 70% recycling rate and zero to landfill, as well as the potential to make significant savings on waste disposal costs. Media training In partnership with CIWM and ESA (numerous clients) Sauce provides accredited communications training in partnership with CIWM and ESA including courses on ‘Getting your message across: communicating with the media and the public', ‘DIY PR' and ‘Social media – getting started.' Sauce also tailor makes training courses for in-house or one-to-one sessions. Opinion research ‘Attitudes to waste and recycling in Great Britain 2011'
Sauce worked with Icaro Consulting to research public attitudes to green advertising claims. Our approach included qualitative and quantitative analysis using innovative techniques to understand what it was about adverts that people responded to, and which aspects triggered support or sparked scepticism. The Consumer Focus report can be found here: http://www.consumerfocus.org.uk/publications/green-expectations-consumers%E2%80%99-understanding-of-green-claims-in-advertising (opens in a new window) Business development Coventry City Council Sauce is undertaking a trade waste business review and market analysis for Coventry City Council's in-house trading service. The project involves surveying local trade waste collection providers and developing a Marketing Plan whereby the City Council can compete locally within Coventry itself and around the sub-region to expand its income earning opportunities. Viridor Viridor contracted Sauce to help raise awareness of its commercial recycling service in Peterborough. A strategy was developed incorporating all local media channels, including sponsorship of Green Month on Hereward FM, to inform businesses of the recycling service available to them. A £10,000 campaign generated at least £10,000 of new business in just four weeks. Events management Remade South East Sauce helped Remade South East develop and deliver the SEEDA Construction Resource Efficiency and Sustainable Construction programmes across the South East. The programmes involved contacting construction companies informing them of site waste management plans, offering training sessions, conducting waste audits and recommending methods to reduce waste. Valpak Sauce worked with Valpak to run a series of regional workshops informing small and medium sized businesses of the pre-treatment requirements and promoting wider environmental messages, including recycling and green procurement. Over 100 individuals from approximately 80 businesses attended the workshops. Internal communications DHL Sauce created an internal communications campaign to promote DHL's environmental services to staff throughout the company. The work comprised developing the strategy, which included designing a leaflet, identifying suitable eco gifts, writing case studies for email news shots and articles for in-house magazines.
